There be rants here.
Oh, hello.
Assuming anyone actually manages to read this, I thought it was time to explain where I've been and what's been going on. You see, about a year ago when this was going to come back I was talking to an artist and changing the style up. My initial character sketches turned out really fun and I liked them a lot but as Ryan began to do pages I couldn't get into them anymore. There was something wrong about them but I couldn't put my finger on it. I told Ryan I wasn't digging on the new incarnation and we kind of lost touch.
Over the last year I have gotten married, bought a house, and started a small business selling used games with a comic and review of classic games called Sandstorm Genesis Games. Doing all of those things, and (usually) working a full-time job pretty well destroyed all the free time I had. The other day after the site had launched and things had started to die down I pulled out my sketch pad and started to doodle and came up with some K&J designs I liked.
The plan is to indeed bring them back with myself at the artistic helm (and a buddy doing the storyboards) but it will be updated pretty much whenever. Instead of 24-page issues I will be doing a consistent storyline with random story arcs, similar to the issue format but I won't be sticking to the 24-page format. I won't give you an estimated release, I won't give you a schedule, but I'd love to be able to pull off a page a week. We'll see what happens.

Coming back for real this time. Honest.

Yes, people. After a 2 year hiatus we are finally coming back with new pages. The new artist, Ryan Hughes, is still getting his footing and I'm amassing a backlog of pages, but soon marks the (finally and for really) triumphant return of Kyle and Josh! A few things to note:
The style has changed to be slightly less cartoony, which was intentional. Part of the problem we started having as we got into more issues were ways of making people look different and they really didn't. So they have a slightly more realistic approach but I like the style.
We're also not immediately picking up from where we left off but in fact issue #5 will be called "Enter the Bubba." The conclusion of The Zoo story arc will happen, possibly at issue 7, but won't happen right away. The pages for The Inevitable Conclusion will be pulled and probably added as extras in the second volume of K&J comics.
Updating schedule is still being hammered out based on Ryan's schedule. We'd like it to be 2 days a week like before, but it may unfortunately only be 1. Still, new pages are better than no pages so check back soon or subscribe to the RSS feed for when we're finally coming back!

The explanation
There are a lot of reasons that I have decided not to continue with Kyle and Josh as it is right now. The first and biggest is that I do not have the time to devote to something like this. When using that excuse I hear a lot of people tell me that I should just update whenever I feel like it. But really, a web comic is almost like a business. To run a successful webcomic you need an updating schedule, something that brings people back and makes them want to read it. If they don't know when the next one is coming it's way too easy just to forget about it.
The other reason is that I just don't have the same love for the comic that I once did. I've been working on this thing on and off for over 10 years now. During that time I've put a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and finances into the whole thing. Regardless, I think 10 years is a good amount of time for almost anything and it's time to pretty much move on.
That said, there are only 2 ways that Kyle and Josh will make a return. The first and most unlikely is that I both find the time and my next project completely falls through. The second is if someone else agrees to do all the artwork, from start to finish. I have scripts that are more-or-less finished and they could easily be added to this if someone willing and able to pick up the artistic mantle is eager enough to take a stab at it.
What I will be doing in the meantime is updating the Gallery and the Archive sections with everything I have amassed over the last 10 years. You'll see a good chunk of things that very, very few people have ever seen, including the very first, complete issue of Kyle and Josh that we did on Kyle's computer. There will also be a few additions to the gallery and comic pages in that I will eventually be able to add text to give you more of an understanding of what you're looking at. Don't expect that until after the first of the year, though.
In the event I ever get fan comics or randomly do a comic myself I'll post them, or if someone emails me to say they want to take over drawing it I'll let you know, but for the time being you can consider this the end of Kyle and Josh.

I'm a big, fat liar.
The comic is not in fact coming back. It was not an easy decision to come to. Expect a full explanation later with some changes to the site.
